Climate Change by Mai Tong Yang (South Korea ETA)
It’s spring (well actually, pretty much summer) in South Korea—the weather is getting warmer, flowers are blooming all around, the mountainsides are covered in fresh green vegetation… While this is a gorgeous time of year, though, it also heralds the arrival of 미세먼지 misae meonji: fine dust particles that greatly diminish the country’s air quality and cause many of its citizens to walk around wearing masks in order to breathe more easily.
Environmental problems like this are by no means confined to the Korean Peninsula, however, and can create for an interesting discussion with intermediate- to high-level ESL students. Secondary South Korea ETA Mai Tong Yang designed a lesson to go over some environmental issues with her students, and asked them to design and present posters on combatting these problems. While it makes reference to issues in South Korea, the lesson covers a broad range of topics, and can be easily adapted to fit specific problems faced by other countries.
