Thanksgiving Lessons by Grace Lee & Kristen O’Brien (South Korea ETAs)

This week’s lesson of the week will actually have two lessons. They are two Thanksgiving lessons aimed at elementary school students! You can mix and match materials from both lessons, or choose to leave out activities completely.

In the first Thanksgiving lesson, there is a PPT about American Thanksgiving culture (foods, the parade, history, etc), and it also compares Korean Chuseok vs. American Thanksgiving. There is also a “thankful tree” craft, and a “Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” movie.

In the second Thanksgiving lesson, there is also an American Thanksgiving culture PPT about foods, the parade, history, and more. There is also a “turkey” hands craft, and a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt!

Thanksgiving Lesson 2

For the Thanksgiving scavenger hunt I printed out photos of Thanksgiving foods (we learned about them in the intro PPT), and explained the game to the students. The instruction are in the PPT.

I handed out the checklist and had them form teams. I told the students that they had to hunt for the photos around the school (I hung them up in locations), and told them to not take the photos. Instead, they should write down the location of the food on the checklist. I told them they had until after English class ends, till the end of the day, to give the sheet back to me. The fastest team with the most number of items found wins. You could adjust this game by hiding items on only 1 floor, or by hiding them within the classroom. You could also have them search and find the pictures during class instead of outside of class. It’s flexible and you can adjust it!
