Lesson of the Week: Low Tech Filler Games

“Low Tech Filler Games” is a grouping of four games used by South Korea ETA, Ilana Herold. Ilana Herold is an elementary school ETA.

Games can be a nice way to reinforce student learning in a low stakes way. These games are also practicing specific language skills like counting, sentence structure, fluency, and phonics. These facets of English learning are integral for elementary school students. These games offer a structured but fun way to practice the skills. There is a counting game (31 Game), a sentence unscrambling game (Sentence Scramble), a read and repeat game (hot potato/musical mash-up), and a speaking speed game (Pass the Ball Race).

While these games were used in an elementary school classroom, there are elements of the games that could be useful in secondary schools, as well. Ilana has included some tips as to how the games could be differentiated in order to suite the needs’ of more advanced students.

The document featuring these games can be found here.

We hope you get a chance to enjoy these games!
