American Slang by Laura Johnson (South Korea ETA)
This lesson is a fun way to teach secondary students about American culture, through slang. It’s a big hit with students, though beware, they are probably going to be confused forever about how to answer “what’s up?” and “how are you?” – you’ll be getting “fine” and “nothing much” as answers to the two questions, respectively.
Run the Ppt, have them repeat after you ad nauseum. It helps if you are a major ham. Then hand out the cards – MAKE SURE you count the kids in the class and keep back the last cards in the sequence if there are too many cards. Explain the idea of this relay race. 70% comprehension is good enough to start.
Have them repeat the sequence 3 or 4 times, then collect the cards, reshuffle, and make them beat their first time.
When you’re done with this, break them into teams of 3 and makes them write dialogues between a student and a famous person of your (or their) choice. Each dialogue must include 5 slang terms. Two students in each group must act it out for the class.
