American Geography and Slang by Paige Morris
As Fulbright ETAs, our job is not only to teach English but also to act as “cultural ambassadors”, fostering understanding and cooperation between the USA and the countries in which we teach. In our classes, many of us want to teach our students more about the USA, but sometimes it can be difficult to find ways to do so without simply lecturing at them in English.
That’s why South Korea ETA Paige Morris designed this interactive “American Geography and Slang” lesson for her high school girls. Students introduce facts about food, celebrities, and slang from different regions to the class, followed by a speed quiz to review what they have learned. There are some Korea-specific references in the presentation, but ETAs teaching elsewhere can easily modify it to fit their own placement countries.
