Grace Lee (South Korea ETA)

Most of my 3rd graders already know the alphabet from hagwon, or were taught by their homeroom teachers, so I created this unit to teach my students basic phonics. This will help students learn alphabet letters, but will also teach them the sounds they make. I’m not going into more advanced phonics yet, but right now, I thought (and my coteacher agreed) they should learn basic phonics and words that begin with those sounds.

I took some inspiration from the materials made by Rebecca Brower (ETA 15-16) and used some inspiration from Grace Lee (ETA 15-16)

First, I showed my students the Phonics PPT. I asked students the alphabet letter name, what sound it makes, and taught them the word that goes with the letter. For ex: A, “ah,” apple. I went through the PPT and as I went along, I asked my students: what words start with “S” “sseu,” they would say “sit” “sorry.” A lot of my kids can speak and know words, but they don’t know how to write or read them.

After going through the PPT, I handed out the matching phonics letter print out. It’s an alphabet chart. Each student gets one, and glues it in their textbook. All the words and graphics match the PPT, and the song I used to teach phonics to my kids.

Next, I showed the phonics song from youtube. I had my students learn and sing it several times. They love this song! They practice the alphabet letter name, the sound it makes, and the word associated with it. Here’s the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlRVhUd … LTIV0x9ZgW

I also created a phonics snakes and ladders game that my kids absolutely loved. I recommend having them play this after they have practiced learning the letters and sounds more. I also made phonics practice writing worksheets, teaching kids to write the alphabet letters uppercase, lowercase, and writing the word associated with it (C,c, Cat). Each page has 4 letters (1st page= A-D, 2nd page= E-H etc). I recommend splitting it up and only giving one practice sheet per class.

The way I taught it is…I used one 40 minute class period to teach phonics, plus gave them the 1st page of the writing practice WS (A-D writing). Now, every class, I make my students sing the youtube phonics song (they follow it with their printouts), and at the end of each class, I make them do another page of the phonics writing practice WS.

For additional resources, I also created 2 phonics homework worksheets. One is fill in the blank, and the other are questions with the sounds. Feel free to assign it as additional work, or for a quiz or test in class~

Contents:

Phonics Lesson PPT

Phonics Letter Print Out (Alphabet Chart)

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlRVhUd ...
